On Monday, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi started a hunger strike from her prison cell in Tehran. The 51-year-old Mohammadi currently spends her life in prison due to several prison sentences. Her family tweeted about her hunger strike and described the demands for this strike.
Her prison sentence is estimated nearly 12 years of incarceration. She has been accused to linked with works with Defenders of Human Rights Centers since 1998. After She was released in October 2020, serving eight years in prison, she was rearrested for charges like propaganda and defamation.
These charges also include her Nobel Peace Prize nomination which was considered to be “espionage for a hostile state”. Her family Twitter that the Hunger strike was a direct protest against the
Islamic Republic’s policy of delaying and neglecting medical care for sick inmates, resulting in the loss of the health and lives of individuals” and the “policy of ‘death’ or ‘mandatory hijab’ for Iranian women.
Mohammadi is suffering due to a heart condition and went for emergency surgery in 2022. After her surgery, she returned to her prison cell. According to her family, she had a medical appointment on October 12 with the heart specialist, but she refused to wear the Hijab which caused the visit cancelation by prison authorities.
